Super Glue

Super Glue is an adhesive or in other words a product used to stick two or more objects together. Super Glue is cyanoacrylate based, but adhesives can be made from a number of substances dependant on the two items which need to be linked together so they can be a product of either natural or synthetic resources.

Super Glue is important in many construction projects or D.I.Y jobs where strength is paramount. The strength of attachment, or adhesion, between an adhesive and its component relies on many factors, including the means by which this occurs. Adhesion may occur either by mechanical means, in which the adhesive works its way into small pores of the material, or by one of several chemical mechanisms. Listed below are some of the categories that Super Glue and other adhesives may be separated into;

• Natural adhesives-mineral sources or food such as vegetables
• Synthetic adhesives- e.g. elastomers (thermosets or thermoplastic) or Super Glues
• Drying adhesives-combination of glues and rubber. Acts as a solvent.
• Contact adhesives-applied to both materials and allowed to dry before the two are linked.
• Hot adhesives (thermoplastic adhesives)-also referred to as “hot melt” adhesives which are thermoplastics e.g. hot glue gun.
• Reactive adhesives- operates as a chemical bonding to the surface. Used in such circumstances involving bolts and moving vehicles.
• UV and Light Curing Adhesives- adhesives which connect materials when in connection with UV or visible light.
• Pressure sensitive adhesives-adhesives which function once the two objects are pressured together making a strong connection to the two items
