Lobe pumps

There are numerous uses for lobe pumps within a wide range of industries. Some of the more familiar industries that use lobe pumps are food and drink, chemical and pharmaceutical companies, where they are hugely popular due to the high-quality sanitary qualities, effectiveness and reliability. The distinct advantage of the lobe pump is its ability to manage solid materials for a diverse range of products. Lobe pumps are frequently used in food applications as this is an area in which the food can be moved, separate and undamaged. It is the fact that the substances are separated and no not come into contact with each other that makes lobe pumps significantly different from an external pump despite many other similarities.

The particle size pumped can be much larger in lobe pumps than in other positive displacement types. Since the lobes do not make contact, and clearances are not as close as in other Positive displacement pumps, this design handles low viscosity liquids with diminished performance. Lobe pumps are similar to external gear pumps in operation in that fluid flows around the interior of the casing. Lobe contact is prohibited by external timing gears located in the gearbox. Pump shaft support bearings are found in the gearbox, and since the bearings are out of the pumped liquid, pressure is restricted by bearing location and shaft deflection, where the meshing of the lobes forces liquid through the outlet port under pressure and to its destination.
