Gaskets

Gaskets are the mechanical seal that is flat and fills the gaps in between two objects, typically situated in such positions to inhibit leakage of any fluid or gas between those two parts during times where they are under various degrees of compression.

Gaskets are an important component as they can be purchased for specific areas and are regularly used in many forms of machinery in which a connection between to others parts needs to be joined. Gaskets are frequently made from sheet materials such as metal, felt, fibreglass or a plastic polymer or even paper. The gasket will commonly be made with the same material of the parts surrounding it; this ensures a tighter fit and preventing the number of problems that can occur from the gap and is made to the strength of the machinery (i.e. a machine containing extremely hot water would not use a gasket made of paper).

Many manufactures of gaskets will provide details are of levels of which a gasket can withstand pressure or compression so no further faults will result in using the gasket. Using a gasket is a cheap solution to this sort of problem as other ways in which the problem can be tackled is to buy two new parts for the object which fit together more efficiently or to acquire a whole new piece of machinery; both of these methods can be expensive with some parts rare and hard to find.
