Silicon Carbide Seal Faces

Applications of Silicon carbide Seal Faces.

Silicon Carbide (SiC) was a discovery of Edward Goodrich Acheson around 1893, and he not only developed the electric batch furnace by which SiC is still made in modern times but also founded The Carborundum Company for mass production of the manufactured goods, primarily for use as an abrasive by Mr. Acheson but is has also proved most effective as a silicon carbide seal face. SiC is a ceramic material produced by a mixture of silicone and carbon and is a common man-made substance.

The material for Silicon Carbide Seal Faces is virtually all synthetic due to the rarity of a natural mineral resource known as moissanite formed together in high temperatures ranging between 1600 and 2500°c.

Silicon carbide is used in a sintered form for diesel particulate filters, which is a device intended to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. Wall-flow diesel particulate filters typically remove 85% or more of the soot, and can at periods (heavily loaded condition) acquire soot removal efficiencies of close to 100%. A diesel-powered vehicle equipped with functioning filter will emit no visible smoke from its exhaust pipe and is a method for cleaning out the filter.

The material formed in the Acheson furnace varies in purity and is dependant on the distance from the graphite resistor heat source. Clear, pale yellow and green crystals are the purest of forms and are found closest to the resistor with the crystals getting darker the further away they are. Purer silicon carbide can be made by the more costly process of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and then used for Silcon Carbide Seal Faces.
