Silicon
Carbide (SiC) was a discovery of Edward Goodrich Acheson around 1893, and he
not only developed the electric batch furnace by which SiC is still made in
modern times but also founded The Carborundum Company for mass production of
the manufactured goods, primarily for use as an abrasive by Mr. Acheson but
is has also proved most effective as a silicon carbide seal face. SiC is a ceramic
material produced by a mixture of silicone and carbon and is a common man-made
substance.
